Wallpaper Removal:How Many Layers of Wallpaper Are Really on Your Wall?

When you look at a wallpapered wall, it may appear that there is only one layer to remove. But once the removal process begins, you can sometimes uncover a history of previous decorating projects hiding underneath.

Older homes especially may have multiple layers of wallpaper, old adhesive, paint, sizing, patches and previous drywall or plaster repairs beneath the surface.

What Could Be Hiding Under Your Wallpaper?

During wallpaper removal, we may uncover:

  • Multiple generations of wallpaper

  • Painted-over wallpaper

  • Old wallpaper adhesive or paste

  • Wallpaper sizing or primer

  • Previous drywall patches

  • Cracks or damaged joint compound

  • Torn drywall face paper

  • Uneven plaster or drywall

  • Areas that were previously repaired but never properly finished

This is why wallpaper removal isn't always as simple as wetting the paper and peeling it off.

The Goal Isn't Just Removing the Wallpaper

Proper wallpaper removal means getting down to a sound, stable surface that can be properly prepared for paint.

Once the wallpaper and adhesive are removed, the walls need to be carefully inspected. Damaged areas may require patching, skim coating or sanding before primer is applied.

Simply painting over leftover adhesive, torn drywall paper or uneven repairs can result in visible imperfections and future coating problems.

Preparation Makes the Difference

A professional wallpaper-removal project may involve:

Removal → Cleaning → Repairing → Skim Coating → Sanding → Priming → Painting

Every wall is different.

Sometimes wallpaper comes off cleanly. Other times, what looks like one simple layer turns into several decades of previous wall coverings and repairs.

The important part is not rushing the process.

At RPR Contractors, we take the time to reach a solid surface, make the necessary drywall repairs, smooth the walls and properly prime them before the finish paint is applied.
