Paint Tips for DIYers

If you’re tackling a painting project yourself, today’s tip is simple but crucial: Always cut in before you roll.

🖌️ What’s “Cutting In”?

“Cutting in” means using a brush to paint around edges—like where the wall meets the ceiling, baseboards, corners, or trim. It gives you clean, sharp lines in tight spots a roller can’t reach.

🧠 Why It Matters

When you cut in before rolling:

  • You avoid lap marks by blending brush and roller textures while both are still wet.

  • You save time on touch-ups later.

  • Your final finish looks clean and professional.

 How To Do It Right

  1. Use a high-quality angled brush (2.5” is a great size).

  2. Don’t overload the brush—dip about 1/3 of the bristles in paint.

  3. Paint a 2-3 inch border around edges.

  4. While your cut-in line is still wet, roll the wall so everything blends seamlessly.

Pro Tip:

If you're using darker or glossier paint, cutting in and rolling in sections (one wall at a time) helps avoid visible seams.
